Being in a foreign country requires a lot of learning. Depending on which country
you go to and what country you leave, things can seem very strange. However, with
time, you adapt to the new culture, norms and way of life. Here is an incident that
happened to a Yemeni guy, Jamal, who left Yemen to America for the first time.1



Since the moment Jamal arrived at Kennedy airport in New York City, he began adapting
a new life style. He changed the cotton pants to jeans, the button-down shirt to
sweaters and the dressy shoes to sneakers and boots. Soon, Jamal started going to
school. One thing Jamal didn't like about school is the food. Jamal never
really liked the fast food in general, neither in NYC nor back in Yemen. However, Jamal
had to get over his eating habits to survive and that was exactly what he did. So, he
started eating burgers and other fast food meals. Everything seemed to be going okay
until Jamal was introduced to the PIZZA.1



Pizza was the one thing Jamal would look at and say "I'd never eat that thing." His friends
would invite him all the time to have pizza, but he would reject their invitations; until one day! One day, Jamal was walking by himself and stopped in front of a pizza place. He wanted to challenge himself and eat pizza. He entered and started looking over the pizza. He saw different kinds of pizza: plain (with chease), with shrimps, with peppers, and then he saw one with, what looked like, fried tomatoes! He liked the way the tomatoes looked and wanted to try them. Therefore, Jamal ordered the pizza with [I]fried tomatoes/I]. He in fact started eating it and liked it. Jamal ate pizza with fried tomatoes for about a month; until he invited his cousin for some pizza!1



One day, Jamal wanted his cousin to try the nice pizza he has been eating. He took his
cousin to the pizza place and told him, "you have to try the pizza with [I]fried tomatoes/I]." His cousin, looking surprised, replied: "Nice joke, I never heard of pizza with fried tomatoes." That's when Jamal lifted up his hand and pointed at the pizza with fried tomatoes. At that moment, his cousin burst into laughter and couldn't stop cracking up. Jamal still not knowing what caused his cousin to laugh asked: "what's so funny?" His cousin replied: "that's pepperoni you idiot, that's pork. I can't believe You've been eating pork all along." Jamal, while in a state of unbelief, couldn't stop himself from laughing either and started laughing hysterically.1



After all, Jamal didn't know that he was eating pork. He thought he was eating fried tomatoes, so may Allah forgive his lack of knowledge. However, it is really funny, because to Jamal, tomatoes never tasted any better! From this, we learn that while being in a foreign country, we should make sure we're eating the right food, along with doing the right thing in all other actions.1
